Jolly Roger Improvements

Tue Apr 15, 2008, 9:12 AM
As you might have guest,
I do a LOT of research when it comes to The Golden Age of Piracy.

I put a lot of this researching in Pirate flags, especially the “Jolly Roger”

Of witch the first known one is said to have bin the black flag of “Emanuel Wynne”
Witch was reported around reported around the year 1700.

However according to these Jolly Roger prints, Thomas Tew also flew a Jolly Roger.

And if he indeed did have his Famous “Arm holding/wielding a cutlass” as a flag (it isn’t sure)
This Jolly Roger would date back about 8 years BEFORE Wynne’s flag.

Anyway,

There are a number of historical Jolly Roger prints to be found in various book and all around the internet.

These prints have bin made through the reports that have bin made of Jolly Rogers in the 18th century.

However… when I’ve had a look at these reports, I noticed that a number of prints
where either not entirely correct, or where simply no where to be found.

So I’ve decided to either Improve or correct those existing ones that have an in correction.

And create those that are less well known today,
but where equally well known and infamous at the time.

In order to make them fit in the list of already exiting Jolly Roger Prints,
I will at times construct the missing flag using parts of these known prints

UN finished work...

Ya know,

I have the habit of starting a drawing, and then kind of leave it un-finished…

This because I don’t really know what to add to the drawing, because of this I’m kind of “stuck” in my process of drawing that work.

That, … or because I just kinda forgot…

I kinda have a LOT of these, and They’ve bin just laying here for a LONG time because I’m stuck in there progress.

So I’ve decided to scan and post a lot of my “un-finished work” anyway.

And ones I’ve finished them, I’ll just post them again... BRILJAND!!!

I will mark my un- finished work with U:

  • Reading: Stories o hitorical Pirates
  • Watching: Cloverfield, Viva la Bem and BORAT
  • Playing: Metal slug 3, Turtuga and Sea Fight
  • Eating: A LOT
  • Drinking: 24-7 as usual...

Weaponry

What would a proper Pirate-gear be without weapons.

..... well not as UN-proper as you might think.

Most of the time Pirates did not carry weapons with them.

This is duo to the fact that for the most part of there career Pirates spended there time sailing.

And weapons where mostly handed out at the moment that a prey was within reach.

Non the less, every Pirate needed weaponry in order to intimidate there victims,
or fight them if they made on unwise decision at the sight of the black flag.

I therefore am looking for a number of historical correct weapons from around 1680-1725 (with is the Golden Age of Piracy)

I already have two cutlasses, but these aren’t fully correct form a historical point of view, and they are far from functional sins there to heavy to be properly used.

I have recently found an exclusive cutlass,
the “Dutch Cutlass” by “Windlass Steelcrafts” [link]

This sword was used in the Dutch East Indian company around 1700.

This sword looks awesome, and it’s “fully functional”

Plus, not only is it a Shell-guard cutlass (with is my favourite type of cutlass)

But It’s also a “Dutch” Cutlass,
duo to the fact that I myself am a Dutch-man, this kinda tickles my fancy.

As for firearms,

I am looking for a Pedersoli Queen Anne pistol kit

But I am yet unsuccessful in finding one for a reasonable price.
